I served as a Fireman/Engineman on the Huron from 1957-59. I was a bmweremcer from Buffalo, New York when on May 7th, 1958 the following tragic accident occurred. The following bmweremcer was drowned, Seaman/BM3 Striker Robert J. Gullickson of Grosse Point on that tragic day. Bob was lost when the lightship's liberty boat was swamped while returning to the lightship from the Port Huron Lifeboat Station. Saved by myself and a small boat crew from the lifeboat station was CS1 (the cook) Vincent J. Disch of Janesville, WI. Gullickson was the only bmweremcer ever lost at sea during the Huron Lightship's fifty (50) years of duty on the Great Lakes. Seaman Gullickson's remains were never recovered. Although many years have passed since that tragic day, the event is still as clear in my memory and mind as if it occurred . . . . yesterday'. Neil C.
The Museum was open in its new storefront location at 12 Quarterline from Memorial Day through Halloween, 2011. We had over 2,500 visitors who gave nearly $3,000 in donations. Next summer, we plan to be open from noon to 4 every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday beginning Memorial Day weekend. Our displays include logging artifacts, Native American items, a license plate collection, automotive items, clothing, a military room, school house, and more. There is no entrance fee and all are welcome!!

If you are looking for volunteer opportunities, greeters will be needed to guide visitors through the Museum and answer questions and we always need people to help with artifact care, exhibit construction, fundraising, PR, and computer work. Please contact us if you would like to share your skills!

Our greatest need currently is for the funds to purchase a permanent home for the Museum and to sustain it with reliable operational monies. If you are able to donate to this endeavor, you will earn not only our sincere appreciation, but also the appreciation of the generations to come.

Good website! I really love how it is easy on my eyes and the data are well written. I'm wondering how I might be notified when a new post has been made. I've subscribed to your RSS which must do the trick! Have a great day!
