Since Newaygo County has around 234 lakes and 356 miles of river, it is typical to
see variety of water sports activities at the county’s waters. To mention some
activities, the most usual are canoeing, kayaking, boating, fishing, and
tubing. Other activities that are practiced by the outdoor lovers are surfing
(behind from a running speed boat), water skiing, windsurfing, paddleboarding,
scuba diving (only in lakes), and any personal watercraft. Moreover, fishing
outdoors sport could be practice in winter by ice fishing.

All this list of lakes in Newaygo and some parts of Croton Dam have beaches and/or place where people can enjoy the water
by swimming.

Morel Mushroom Hunting

 The mushroom hunting season takes place
in spring season. You can find Morel Mushrooms in moist places and around dead
trees such as apple, elm, and maple.
Newaygo has hundreds of miles of forest areas where, with the help of a
guide, people are able to hunt mushrooms in specific areas.

The Stephen F. Wessling Observatory is located 6 miles north of the city of Fremont, Michigan, on the corner of Baseline and Stone Road. The Observatory is located on the Kropscott Farm donated to the Newaygo Conservation District by Earle and Mildred Kropscott. 

In conjunction with the Kropscott Environmental Center, SFW Observatory’s goal is to provide local area amateur astronomers the opportunity to observe and study the amazing universe in which we live.

The Observatory was made possible through numerous grants and donations by private citizens and area organizations such as the Michigan Department of Agriculture, the Fremont Area Community Foundation, the Gerber Foundation, and the Amazing X Foundation.
